Viagra playing new role in fight against Alzheimer's disease [mbGjPaV2ftT]
Sildenafil, better known as Viagra, used for more than two decades to treat male impotence, is now being celebrated for showing promise in the search to find ways to help prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
It follows the results of a study led by Dr. Feixiong Sheng at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. According to Dr. Sheng, “we tried to use what we call the cutting edge ‘big data’ approach created at the Cleveland Clinic – to try to systematically look at about 1,600 FDA approved drugs.”
Dr. Sheng said that analysis also examined several million insurance claims over a six-year period, and showed Viagra users had a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s by an eye-popping 69-percent. Sheng said his research team reached that number after adjusting for other factors including comorbidities, sex, and age.
