Programs that tend to teach one thing or even several things neatly bound and categorized are generally easy to describe and easy to write about.
IDM is not such a program.
We value combining critical inquiry and methodological rigor with creative practice that emphasizes skillful experimentation and play grounded in a commitment to social and ethical responsibility. If we had to sum up the work IDM students
produce, we would say it is work that is curious, interested in questioning, exploring, and moving across ideas, materials, mediums, genres and forms.
Engineering + art, philosophy + design, music + computation, we embody hybridity and syncretism, and situate ourselves at the intersections between disciplines and practices.
Our Masters program is a two-year program that engages students in a flexible course of study combining technical skilling, studio work, critical theory and qualitative research.
Our Bachelor of Science program centers around the IDM core, a suite of courses that focus on the four areas of Image, Sound, Narrative, and Interactivity, as well as advanced electives and courses from the Tandon Engineering core and across NYU.
From extended reality to virtual production; from music technology to wearables; from biodesign to design for accessibility, our faculty teach and do research across a wide range of expertise.
