Does Hemp Show in a Drug Test?
The average drug test is designed to look for the presence of THC and THC metabolites.
That means that it is unlikely for CBD to show up in a drug test. The reason why a standard test won’t catch CBD is that it takes a very specific test to detect the compound.
The employer needs to request for an additional analyte as part of the testing which brings additional charges.
Since CBD is not going to make you high, it is unlikely for employers to spend extra money to detect CBD in a drug test.
The issue appears when the test detects THC. There is no way for the person to prove that the detected THC levels come from hemp flower instead of marijuana.
Hemp flower contains traces of THC (0.3% or less) that can be detected if the type of drug test taken has a lower detection threshold.
This means that taking a hair test is not the same as a urine test.
Hair tests are designed to detect chronic substance use and are unlikely to show up THC from consuming hemp flower, as long as the person doesn’t smoke substantial quantities daily.
A urine test or oral fluid test, on the other hand, have low detection thresholds of 50ng/ml.
ALTHOUGH HIGHLY UNLIKELY, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR A URINE TEST TO DETECT ACCUMULATED TRACE AMOUNTS OF THC.
But, there is a chance for the urine test to turn positive as a result of large, accumulated doses of CBD.
The good news is, after a positive cannabis urine test, a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry test is performed with a cutoff level of 15ng/ml to detect THC metabolite THC-COOH.
This test could prove negative results when it comes to non-psychoactive cannabinoids such as CBD, which means no THC detected.
