As bees forage, they traverse the microbial clouds associated with elements in their environment – green spaces, bodies of water, industrial landscapes. These signatures can be read from the \u201cbee debris\u201d accumulated at the bottom of the hive. We are collaborating with beekeepers in NYC and beyond to recruit honeybees as citizen scientists collecting information on urban aerobiomes, and use the data to understand the environment of their foraging range and detect bee or hive pathogens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Holobiont Urbanism is an ongoing project initiated in 2015 by\u00a0 Kevin Slavin (Former PI, and founder of Playful Systems Lab at the MIT Media Lab)<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0Miguel Perez<\/a>\u00a0(MIT Media Lab) and Devora Najjar (MIT Media Lab and Wyss Institute),\u00a0Dr. Elizabeth Henaff<\/a>\u00a0(NYU)\u00a0Dr. Chris Mason<\/a>\u00a0(Mason Lab at Weill Cornel<\/a>l), Benjamin Berman<\/a>\u00a0(MIT),\u00a0Chris Woebken<\/a>\u00a0(Research Affiliate at the MIT Media Lab), and\u00a0Regina Flores Mir<\/a> (Parsons School of Design) exploring the potential of using honey bees as proxy sampling mechanisms for the urban and rural microbiome.<\/span><\/p>

This work has been shown at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016, and published\u00a0here.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>

Starting in Spring 2021, this project is being continued with NYC beekeepers, spearheaded by Annick Saralegui<\/a>\u00a0at the Henaff Lab.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
